EU Project Pravo-Justice Experts Launched a Webinar Series on Effective Approaches to Working with Juvenile Probation Clients

On 6 May 2025, a cycle of webinars “Effective Approaches to Working with Juvenile Probation Clients” kicked off. It is organised on the initiative and with the expert support of EU Project Pravo-Justice at the request of the Probation Centre. These webinars aim to enhance the professional competence of juvenile probation officers and mentors and build their capacity to provide further training to their colleagues in their regions.

The training is delivered through interactive online sessions featuring real-life case studies and topic-based discussions. Moreover, staff members from different regions of Ukraine also have a chance to share their experiences. The training course is delivered by Olena Kochura, Key Expert on Reforming the Penitentiary System and Probation at EU Project Pravo-Justice, and Nataliia Stroieva, National Expert at EU Project Pravo-Justice.

“Probation plays a significant role in building a child-friendly justice system. That is why we initiated this training – so that every employee could master the modern toolkit and adhere to best international practices,” said Olena Kochura.

Natalia Stroieva emphasised that it is crucial not only to acquire knowledge but also to develop the skills required to apply it effectively in professional practices.

“Theoretical knowledge is the foundation, but it will only become valuable when it forms the basis for practical decisions. We must not only understand teenagers, but also be equipped with the tools to make an impact — in a professional, humane and effective manner,” emphasised Nataliia Stroieva.

Viktor Vasiuk, Deputy Director of the Probation Centre, noted that the webinar has practical value.

“This is not just training. It is an investment in professional development. Course attendees will not only have the opportunity to enhance their skills, but will also be able to share their knowledge with colleagues who are working with teenagers for the first time. This is especially important for departments that have not had cases involving children,” emphasised Viktor Vasiuk.

The training programme consists of 13 practice-oriented modules and will be implemented until 17 June. It covers key aspects of working with adolescents in conflict with the law, ranging from developmental psychology and gender issues to effective communication techniques, risk assessment, preventing reoffending and implementing probation programmes such as “Life Skills Development”, “Changing Pro-Criminal Thinking”, “Overcoming Aggressive Behaviour”, “Overcoming Domestic Violence” and “Preventing Substance Abuse”.

The first training module focused on the psychosocial characteristics of adolescence. During this module, the participants examined factors influencing adolescent risky behaviour, including gender differences and the role of social environment.

In the second module, trainers focused on effective communication with minors. Participants learned about motivational interviewing techniques, toolkits for gathering information for risk assessment, and developing an individual approach to each client.

After completing the training course, participants will take a final test. Successful participants will obtain certificates confirming their qualifications and new competencies.
